Ditch The Car And Walk To Work In October Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe is encouraging Latrobe Valley residents to ditch the car for a day, and walk to work on Friday 1 October 2010. By Russell Northe - 5th October 2010 - Back to News Now in its 12th year, National Walk to Work Day is an annual event which helps employers and employees to build regular walking into their daily routine.
"Whether you walk the entire distance or part of it by parking an extra couple of blocks away, everyone should try and build walking into their day for the sake of healthy living and environmental awareness," said Mr Northe.
"While I unable to walk from my home in Traralgon to my Morwell office, I will be endeavouring to walk as much as possible on this day, including taking my dog for an evening stroll.
"Like me, there are many people in the Latrobe Valley who have to travel inter-town to work, but this shouldn’t be a reason to not participate. There are still a number of ways that we can easily be involved in National Walk to Work Day."
• If you can't walk all the way to work, use public transport and get off the bus a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way to work.
• If you must drive, leave the car at least a kilometre from your destination and walk the rest of the way.
• Take a half-hour walk at lunchtime and where possible use the stairs.
• If you are required to sit a lot at work, get up and walk around at least once every hour.
"There’s still time to register and enter the draw to win one of two walking holidays for two people in New Zealand or Tasmania, and every person who registers and pledges to participate will receive a $25 Rockport voucher.
"There are some really simple ways that we can become healthier, through easy and effective exercise like walking. Walking to work, walking up stairs, walking at lunch time and walking home are all great ways of building more walking into our lives.
"I encourage everyone to have a go, and put some focus on your health and wellbeing."
