By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st July 2009 - Back to News

According to Bass Coast Shire Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith, a record number of students attended the event.

"Last year the event attracted just short of 500 students, this year the figure increased to over 600," said Mr Smith.

"It’s an achievement in itself to reach the ten year anniversary for the event, and to have a record number of students participate in the event in the same year is fantastic."

The two day event is aimed at primary school aged children and focuses on a number of indoor and outdoor activities.

"The indoor activities included water quality games, renewable energy activities, waste and recycling games, a marine environment puppet show, climate change bowling game and a bug’s art activity," explained Mr Smith

"Despite the wet weather most outdoor activities ran as planned.

"The outdoor activities included the very popular Dinosaur Dig activity, the George Bass coastal walk and a beach combing/litter activity that was set up in the main hall due to the wind and rain we experienced over the two days," said Mr Smith.

This year’s theme for World Environment Day was Your Planet needs you – unite to combat climate change. The expo also included an area in the hall set up with environmental displays.

"Students were given a question sheet and had to find the answers which were included within the eight displays. All aspects of the event focused on educating the students to gain a better understanding about environmental issues."

Council would like to thank the organisations and local volunteer groups who make this event a success every year.

Members of the Bass Coast Alliance involved in this event include Bass Coast Shire Council, Phillip Island Landcare Network, Parks Victoria, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Westernport Water, South Gippsland Water and the Phillip Island Conservation Society.
