So you want to be a writer...Are you looking for some encouragement to help you with your writing? Would you like to join a local writing group? How do you get published and where can you get advice? By Wellington Shire Council - 19th October 2005 - Back to News All of these questions and many more will be answered when author/editor Sandra Lynn Evans conducts two sessions for budding writers at Sale and Yarram libraries later this month.
Ms Evans will talk about her magazine Positive Words, which has been especially designed for creative writers of all ages.
The Traralgon writer started her career as a cadet journalist at the Latrobe Valley Express. She left the newspaper to raise her four children but continued to write in her spare time and 10 years ago joined a writing group at Traralgon Neighbourhood House. She now tutors that group and two others in the area.
"Three years ago I became aware of the limited publication opportunities for writers, which meant many writers were becoming discouraged so I began a self-funded project - a monthly magazine publishing short stories and poetry as well as offering hints, advice and encouragement to new and experienced writers," Ms Evans said.
Ms Evans has had work published in many local newspapers, FreeXpresSion, The Barbed Wire Bucket, Polestar, The Mozzie, New Idea, People’s Friend, Take 5, That’s Life, The Herald Sun, Amnesty International magazine, Rural Women’s Network, Mother Earth News, many anthologies and has won several awards in the past two years.
She is currently working on her first novel and a collection of poetry and anecdotes with fellow writer Kay Ruane.
"Through writing, I have gained strength and bolstered my flagging self-esteem, which is something I often write about and find useful when I am encouraging other writers."
Wellington’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Steven Dickson said: "This is a great opportunity for budding writers to receive some valuable advice, information encouragement from someone with first-hand experience.
"It would be terrific if one or both of these sessions could inspire local writers to take the next step further and form a writer’s group to share ideas and experiences."
Ms Evans’s session will be at the Sale Library on Friday 28 October at 1pm and a second session will be held at the Yarram Library on Monday 31 October at 1.30pm. Afternoon tea provided.
Bookings preferred but not essential. For further information call Cathy Carr on 5142 3368.
