East Gippsland Emerges From The Ashes

Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis yesterday congratulated the East Gippsland community on its remarkable recovery from the bushfires of January 2003.

Mr Davis told the Parliament he had the honour of launching a book of personal accounts of those affected in the Bogong, Razorback and Pinnibar areas when the fires swept through, leaving devastation.

The book, Flames Across the Mountains, was launched at the Native Dog Plain in the Alpine National Park on Sunday.

"I want to acknowledge the contribution of the compilers of these individual stories, and there were approximately 200 individual contributions, Leanne Appleby, Sandra Livingstone and Brian Blackman, who put in a great deal of effort and resources to ensure that this personal record was published," Mr Davis told the Parliament.

"Flames Across the Mountains is a very well-presented publication; not only the text and the individual stories but also the graphic photographs showing the devastation caused which supported the individual accounts."

Mr Davis said the book had captured the true essence of how the communities affected by the fires pulled together and supported each other through what was a devastating time.

"Almost two years on, the land and the people are still scarred, but the East Gippsland community has shown an enormous amount of strength to pull each other through and begin to heal," he said.

"The entire community must be congratulated on the way it has recovered from the 2003 bushfires, and Flames Across the Mountains is a true testament to the spirit and courage of those living in East Gippsland."
