Upgraded Newborough Hall Car Park Passes The Rain TestImprovements to the Newborough Hall environs has reached another milestone, with upgraded and extended car parking facilities now ready for sealing. By Latrobe City Council - 12th July 2007 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora, said that construction of the $150,000 project was well underway and would eventuate in additional car park spaces for those using the hall, and incorporate four extra wide parking bays for use by people with a disability.
"The project provides a new, safer access for vehicles entering the hall car park by locating the entrance further away from the busy Rutherglen Road/Balfour Street intersection," Cr Zimora said.
"Considerable attention has also been paid to drainage requirements, to ensure sections of the car park aren’t subject to water build-up in future, as in past times. The recent rains provided a very tangible demonstration that a recurring problem has now been solved. I think hall users are going to be really pleased with the result," Cr Zimora said.
"The existing west car park has been upgraded to provide 39 sealed car parking spaces including two disability access car parking spaces, whilst the east car park has been extended to provide an additional six spaces also including the provision of two disability access parking spaces.
"Landscaping and sealing works will be completed shortly and the car park upgrade will then be finalised," Cr Zimora said.
Newborough Village Traders president, Maureen Mumford, said improvements have also been made to the pedestrian access to the kitchen and band room areas, along the west side of the hall and some additional planting will be undertaken to improve the landscape of the car park surrounds.
"Bollards are currently being installed to discourage vehicle use in the reserve and provide a more attractive environment for activities around the hall," Mrs Mumford said.
"Our committee is also currently working on a project that will incorporate art panels into a fence that abuts the children’s playground. The art panel will highlight the seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter, in a way that reflects our community," Mrs Mumford explained.
"Concepts for enhancing Newborough’s Rutherglen Road streetscape, the hall and its surrounds, and the parkland between the hall and the preschool, were little more than dreams ten years ago. It’s fantastic to see those concepts gradually being turned into reality.
"We set out to create an environment based on a theme of ‘family and community’ and so much of that has now come together. There is enormous pride for Newborough Village now developing in the community, and the current projects will I am sure, add to that," Mrs Mumford concluded.
Cr Zimora said further works are being funded through council’s 2007/2008 budget with an upgrade to the existing footpath linking the Murray Road Preschool with Newborough Village to be undertaken. "The preschool car park itself is also on the agenda for refurbishment in the not too distant future," Cr Zimora said.
"To me, the greatest thing about projects such as this is the way communities are brought together by a determination and willingness to improve their communal environment. Congratulations to the Newborough Traders and all those involved in making this community a great place to live, work, and enjoy life," Cr Zimora added.
