Orchestra Victoria In The Valley

More than 40 students from Latrobe Valley and Gippsland schools have been selected to attend an intensive two-day workshop with some of Orchestra Victoria’s top musicians.

The musicians will hold the free workshop at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre on May 25 and 26 as part of Orchestra Victoria’s long-running ‘On the M.O.V.E’ education program. The workshop will be led by renowned professional conductor, Stephen Williams.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the workshop would conclude with a free community evening concert on May 26 at 6.30pm Latrobe Performing Arts Centre.

"We are always delighted to welcome Orchestra Victoria to Latrobe City. Our relationship with this wonderful ensemble of talented musicians is one based not only on the appreciation of great music, but on the mutual understanding that rural and regional audiences need access to these types of events and concerts.

"On this occasion, the musicians are freely giving of their time and skills to ensure that local and regional students have the chance to learn. Once the students have undertaken the workshop, they will have the opportunity to play alongside Orchestra Victoria and showcase their new skills. What a wonderful prospect," Cr White said.

Orchestra Victoria violinist, John Noble, said Orchestra Victoria was also inviting local music teachers, ensemble leaders and local conductors to register for a two-day professional development workshop that would be run simultaneously.

"This unique education model is led by a professional conductor with national and international experience and will help music educators in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland regions extend their skills. We place a great deal of importance on the work we do in regional Victoria.

"Unfortunately, kids in regional Victoria don’t have access to the same learning opportunities as their metropolitan counterparts, so our workshop aims to bridge that gap and hopefully prepare them for a career in music," Mr Noble concluded.

‘On the M.O.V.E program’ is supported by Orchestra Victoria sponsors including Bendigo Bank (the Orchestra’s principal regional partner), Arts Victoria, Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, William Angliss (Victoria Charitable Foundation) and Collier Charitable Trust. Orchestra Victoria is also grateful to the patronage of Dr Peter Kingsbury of the Gippsland Dental group for his generous support of this program.

Patrons wishing to attend the concert will need to register their attendance by contacting the Latrobe Performing Arts Box Office on 5176 3559.
