The many volunteers who work for Latrobe City Council’s Meals on Wheels, Planned Activity Groups, We Care and the Walking School Bus programs were treated to a lunch at Kernot Hall last week as a thank you for their hard work over the year.

Acting general manager, city marketing and development, Peggy Stevenson, said that the event was held to recognise the valuable commitment of the volunteers.

"Around 140 volunteers came to the lunch and many of these were presented with gifts to acknowledge the many years of service that they had put in. These special people provide such a valuable service to the community, either by delivering a hot lunch to Meals on Wheels recipients, or by organising day trips or other activities for residents attending Planned Activity Groups, or perhaps by just sharing a cuppa and a chat with a senior resident living alone.

"All these services are vital to those residents who receive them. The volunteers that willingly give their time to help others should be congratulated and this thank you lunch is Council’s way of showing our gratitude for the enormous support they provide to the community," Ms Stevenson concluded.

Ms Stevenson presented flowers, certificates and engraved time pieces to 27 long serving volunteers.

Entertainment was provided by Irish musician Paddy O’Dowd and the volunteers enjoyed a spit roast lunch and dessert.
