Gallery provides opportunity to learn art of feltingHave you ever wanted to take a class in felting? Tutor, Della Jones will be holding a day long course in felting on Sunday 4 September at the Latrobe Regional Gallery. By Latrobe City Council - 30th August 2005 - Back to News "Della Jones is a local secondary teacher, sheep farmer and feltmaker. She is a committee member of the Victorian Feltmakers, frequently teaches workshops and has won several awards for her work," Ms Tegart said.
Gallery Director Louise Tegart, said that felt is generally thought to be the earliest form of textile. The oldest example found by archaeologists comes from the Central Asian Steppes and dates back to 6000 BC, well before evidence of woven cloth.
"Wool is the easiest and most common fibre to use for felt, although other animal fibres such as alpaca, angora rabbit, mohair, cashmere, and camel hair are also successfully used. During felting, wool fibres migrate and entangle with one another and create cloth," Ms Tegart said.
"During the workshop with Della Jones you will make your own stylish woollen scarf, while also sampling a range of basic two-dimensional felt techniques suitable for articles such as clothing, bags, wall hangings and rugs. Wool is provided, however there are some materials your need to bring: plastic bucket, rubber gloves, 2 old towels, 2 rolls of bubble wrap 3 metre x 30cm,"
The course runs from 11am - 4pm. Cost is $44, places are limited and bookings are essential on 5128 5700.
