Ingram To Facilitate Major Debate On Gippsland Lakes

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, will this week facilitate a major debate in State Parliament on the future direction of the Gippsland Lakes.

Mr Ingram last week contacted the leaders of both sides of politics to inform them of the subject of the Matter of Public Importance (MPI), which he will introduce to Parliament on Wednesday.

"I intend to outline in the debate some of the challenges facing the Gippsland Lakes, including environmental issues and management challenges," Mr Ingram said.

"There must be a direction and vision to ensure we pass on the lakes in a better condition to the next generation.

"As the key driver for the establishment of the Gippsland Lakes & Catchment Task Force in 2001, many of the challenges facing the Gippsland lakes are as relevant now as they were then.

"There has been an apparent loss of interest, commitment and funding to the Gippsland Lakes & Catchment Task Force from the State Government over that time.

"It is essential that governments fully support a united and coordinated management structure and direction for the Gippsland Lakes.

"The Gippsland Lakes are one of our region’s greatest assets -- not just environmentally, but also as an economic asset through tourism, lifestyle and recreation as an iconic asset as part of our regional branding.

"The MPI will be just the second call to an independent MP in the past decade and gives a real opportunity for important issues, like the future of the Gippsland Lakes, to be discussed in State Parliament.

"The debate will feature at least 11 speakers from both sides of Parliament and will commence approximately 10.15am on Wednesday, expecting to last over two hours.

"Anyone wishing to listen to the debate can do so by clicking the live broadcast icon from my website www.craigingram.com.au," Mr Ingram concluded.
