Ingram calls on state to match Great Alpine Road funding

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the State Government to match the Commonwealth funding commitment to the Great Alpine Road upgrade.

In correspondence to the Minister for Transport and discussions with Vic Roads’ regional manager, Mr Ingram has outlined the concerns of the community and regular travellers on the road.

"The removal of the highway rule in January as a result of legislation recently passed through Parliament in the Road Management Bill exposes the government and Vic Roads to potential litigation if the road fails to meet the appropriate expected standard," Mr Ingram said.

"At a recent public forum in Omeo, a committee was formed to examine what options were available to ensure that the Great Alpine Road could be upgraded to an acceptable safety standard.

"The Great Alpine Road B500 Management study 2004, has identified the section of road between Bruthen and Omeo as the area of most concern where 24 casualty crashes have occurred between Bruthen and Omeo and thirteen of those on the narrow and windy section south of Ensay.

"Many sections of the Great Alpine Road fail to meet the standards set down in the study, which establishes a standard for the road.

"I have invited the Minister to visit and personally experience the trip up the Great Alpine Road with local bus operator Trevor Smith.

"It is essential that the State Government matches the Commonwealth contribution so that those sections of the road which fail the B500 standard can be upgraded to ensure the safety of the travelling public and that the region can fulfil its tourism potential," Mr Ingram concluded.
