They planted over 900 native trees, shrubs and grasses at Queens Parade Wetlands in Traralgon.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that the planting days were a great way of involving the community and getting the children to take great pride in their local surroundings.

"On each of the two days around 100 students planted around 4 trees and shrubs each to enhance the parkland, create species diversity and create more habitat for the fauna species that live there.

"A variety of trees and shrubs were used, such as black sheoke, paperbarks, tree violets, flax lilies and tussock grasses. Providing a variety of indigenous plantings will help create an attractive local amenity and a place where local wildlife can live," Cr Kam said.

Cathy Marr, junior leader from Liddiard Road primary school said, the students got to be physically active and participate in an activity they may not have been involved with before.

"They got to dig their own holes, plant the tree and water it in. It was a great way of connecting with the local environment and learning to take pride in their own community.
