Volunteers Needed For New School Year

Bass Coast Shire Council is seeking volunteers to ensure the Walking School Bus program continues. State Government funding for the program ends in August.

Council’s Walking School Bus Coordinator, Lisa Archibald, said volunteers are needed throughout the year on walking and cycling routes in Cowes, Newhaven and Inverloch.

"The aim of the Walking School Bus program is to increase the health, fitness, and road safety skills of children by providing a safe and supervised alternative to car travel," said Ms Archibald.

"For volunteers, being part of the program is an opportunity to walk regularly, meet new people and help local children in their area.

"Currently most of our volunteers are parents of school children. We would love to get members of walking or cycling groups involved, as you don’t need to have children in the program to become a volunteer.

"It is a fantastic way to get involved with the community and volunteers are provided with training and safety equipment.

"We need more volunteers pounding the pavement with the children to ensure the program can continue. The more volunteers we have, the easier the ride," said Ms Archibald.

Volunteers should have a basic understanding of road safety principles, be able to commit about an hour a ‘shift’ either before or after school, be prepared to undergo a working with children check and be reliable.

Volunteers can participate in the program on a regular basis or as an emergency fill in.

"We’re quite flexible with our volunteers and try to spread the load. Depending on the response we receive, volunteers may have to commit as little as an hour a month," explained Ms Archibald.

To register your interest in becoming a Walking School Bus volunteer, contact Lisa Archibald on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or email l.archibald@basscoast.vic.gov.au
