Climate Change Impact Study Announced For The CoastA detailed study will be undertaken on the impacts of predicted climate change on the Gippsland coast from Andersons Inlet in the west, to the New South Wales border. By Department of Primary Industries - 4th June 2003 - Back to News Duncan Malcolm, Chair of the Gippsland Coastal Board welcomed the recent announcement by the Federal Minister for Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp that funding had been allocated to the Board from the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) to undertake the study.
Increased global temperatures are predicted to result in global sea level rise, caused by melting of polar ice caps and thermal expansion of ocean waters. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the CSIRO predict that by 2050, sea level will rise between 5 to 32cm, and between 9 to 88cm by 2100, depending on various assumptions.
Mr Malcolm said potential impacts of climate change on the Gippsland coast include increased flooding of low lying areas and accelerated erosion, due to higher water levels and predicted increased storm intensity. Also an increased threat to public infrastructure such as jetties, sea walls, roads and bridges and to privately owned coastal property.
"The threat to the sandy islands and fringing wetlands of Corner Inlet, the outer barrier of the Gippsland Lakes and other coastal estuaries such as the Snowy River needs to be assessed," he said.
Mr Malcolm also said the development of a high resolution digital terrain model will be an important part of the project and the most recent estimates of possible land subsidence on the coast resulting from the lowering of the Latrobe aquifer would also be included in the study.
"A request for expressions of interest from qualified consultants and organisations will be advertised in the near future," he said.
Information on the progress of the study will be progressively updated on the Gippsland Coastal Board’s web site at www.gcb.vic.gov.au and public meetings will also be convened in selected coastal townships to update communities on study results.
