Have You Had Polio Or Know Someone Who Has?Come along to a FREE 2 hour information session and find out more about Polio and its’ Late Effects – Friday 2nd June 2006. By Polio Network - 5th May 2006 - Back to News The polio plight is continuing anew as even those who may not have suffered any residual disability after rehabilitation from the infection are now experiencing what is known as the Late Effects of Polio or Post Polio Syndrome.
In Australia, the Late Effects of Polio not only potentially affects the 40,000 Australians who contracted polio before its eradication here, but also the hundreds of ‘new Australians’ – younger immigrants who have survived polio in their native countries before moving to Australia.
The Late Effects of Polio is the result of years of overcompensation by existing motor neurons for those neurons that were damaged or killed off by the polio virus. It is characterised by a set of unexpected new symptoms including muscle weakness, joint pain, increased sensitivity to cold, sleeping or swallowing difficulties, and unaccustomed fatigue, occurring some 15–40 years after the initial infection.
Unfortunately due to lack of awareness, it is often misdiagnosed as normal ageing and degeneration, leaving those affected without access to interventions that can assist with management of the condition.
The PolioNetwork will be running a session explaining the Late Effects of Polio on Friday 2nd June, 2006 from 1.00pm to 3.00pm at:
The Conference Room Central Gippsland Health Service Cnr Palmerston and Cunningham Streets Sale
Afternoon tea provided. Bookings essential – Ph: 9418 0411 / 1800 805 384.
