Local Artist Receives Naidoc Week Award

Well known Wonthaggi artist Patrice Muthaymiles Mahoney was named the "Peninsula Region Indigenous Artist of the Year" at the Penninsula Region NAIDOC Week Dinner Dance held at Norwood Estate

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 8th July 2008 - Back to News

A number of Patrice Muthaymiles Mahoney’s works are included in Bass Coast Shire Council’s Art Collection and Patrice plays an active role in Bass Coast NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Development Team Leader, Kerri Ritchie, said Patrice was a deserving recipient of the award.

"Not only is Patrice an outstanding artist but she is a highly valued member of the community, contributing many volunteer hours to promoting and supporting indigenous issues within our community," said Ms Ritchie.

"The announcement of the award is very timely, as Patrice has organised an exhibition to celebrate NAIDOC Week in Bass Coast.

"The Exhibition is at the Coalfields Art Gallery and runs from 3 - 13 July."

Patrice herself was overwhelmed by the award.

"I was looking forward to hearing who would win the award and after they called out the name I was still looking to see who it was," said Patrice.

"It really took me by surprise and I am still trying to find out who nominated me, it is a real honour to receive the award."

Janice Orchard, Director of Coalfields Art Gallery said the award was well deserved.

"Patrice continues to work hard to preserve and promote her culture with her art and her forward looking attitude," said Ms Orchard.

"Patrice inspires young aboriginals to achieve their dreams, whether in art, culture or commerce.

"She is an inspiration to us all as she balances her own commitments as a working artist, teacher and mother of four young children."

This is the third year that Patrice has organised an exhibition to highlight and promote NAIDOC Week within Bass Coast. As part of the exhibition Patrice also organises art and craft activities for children. This year the family fun day is at Coalfields Art Gallery on 9 July and includes a range of activities for children and adults as well as a BBQ lunch.
