In May we playedThe end of May bought with it the end of Come and Play – All of May, a month long celebration of arts across Gippsland. By Portal Admin - 6th June 2017 - Back to News Thoughout the month there were over thirty events across Bass Coast, including a diverse range of arts activities.
The events ranged from a morning watercolour workshop, to live music and performances in the evening - there really was something for everyone.
Many events were booked out, with residents and visitors alike wholeheartedly embracing the activities available.
All of the participants interviewed rated the event that they attended as 'excellent', with many highlighting the outstanding work of the artists and facilitators of workshops.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, was thrilled to learn that for 67 per cent of attendees interviewed, this was their first year attending programs as part of Come and Play.
"It is great to see that Come and Play was able to reach out to and include so many people, and many for the first time," Cr Rothfield said.
"This is a great demonstration that our community both needs and appreciates arts initiatives such as Come and Play.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the events I attended, as did many I have spoken to. It is clear, through the community’s response, that celebrating and engaging with the arts is and importatnt part of the Bass Coast lifestyle."
Filmaker and Artist in Residence, Jakeb Anhva undertook a successful residency in Bass Coast, hosted by the Rhyll Community Association.
Jakeb recorded significant amounts of footage with community members throughout the week and has now begun working on a film.
In addition to this, Jakeb held a screening and Q&A, spellbounding the audience with his film Blush of Fruit.
Programs like Come and Play, which is proudly supported by Council, encourage the wider community to participate in the arts and experience something new, from learning a new skill to participating in a different activity, or simply just exploring a new perspective and celebrating the diverse, dynamic and inspiring arts community in which we live.
