An official committee to Latrobe City Council, the board’s purpose is to provide advice to council on policies and strategies for furthering the development of tourism within Latrobe City.

The board has been instrumental is developing the Latrobe Tourism Plan, establishing the Latrobe City Business Tourism Association and providing recommendations to Tourism Victoria on the Regional Tourism Action Plan.

The board is made up of Latrobe City councillors, council officers, tourism businesses and community members.

The incoming chair of the board, Cr Rohan Fitzgerald, said the tourism industry is very much alive in Latrobe City.

"Through the long-term commitment of a host of operators, networks and government agencies, tourism in Latrobe City has evolved into what is now an established and vital industry sector," Cr Fitzgerald said.

"Tourism is a significant industry in Latrobe injecting $M 92.7 into the economy. The new board will continue the successful work of the previous board keeping abreast of current issues within the tourism industry.

"The Latrobe Tourism Advisory Board also works with and supports other tourism bodies such as ‘Destination Gippsland Limited’ which markets our region to state, national and even international markets, promoting Gippsland-wide attractions from the snowfields to the coast and from wineries to extreme sports; and the Latrobe City Business Tourism Association which is growing in strength and represents the actual operators of tourism establishments and services," Cr Fitzgerald explained.

Cr Rohan Fitzgerald said Gippsland is becoming better known for tourism after the ‘Inspired by Gippsland’ marketing campaign undertaken by Destination Gippsland Limited.

"Businesses and residents often fail to recognise Latrobe City as a tourism destination, but Latrobe is positioned well in central Gippsland which lends itself to hub and spoke touring.

"Tourism can take many forms, and while many people think only in terms of tourists who are here for a holiday or passing through, there is significant income for our region and businesses through corporate tourism, conference tourism, people visiting friends and relatives, and Latrobe’s strength - event tourism.

"With the recent announcement by the Federal Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson; and the State Minister for Tourism, Tim Holding; that Gippsland will receive 1.5m for tourism activity from Bushfire Recovery Funding; the Tourism Advisory Board in collaboration with the Latrobe City Business Tourism Association Inc will ensure Latrobe takes full advantage of the opportunities this presents," Cr Fitzgerald added.
