Australian String Quartet to perform in TraralgonThe Australian String Quartet will perform at the Latrobe City Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon on Tuesday 19 August at 8pm. By Latrobe City Council - 13th August 2003 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Manager Arts, Paul Holton, said the quartet would perform three works on the night.
"The quartet will perform Debussy's String Quartet in G minor, Opus 10 (1893) followed by Beethoven's String Quartet in E flat, Opus 74 ("Harp") (1809). The third piece is yet to be decided. The idea is that they will involve the audience by talking with them about the choice of this third piece," Mr Holton said.
"This highly-talented foursome includes violinist Natsuko Yoshimoto who at the age of 11 won a scholarship to study violin at the Yehudi Menuhin School in the UK. Natsuko has been in demand from a young age as a chamber musician and soloist appearing frequently at major international festivals and with many orchestras," Mr Holton said.
"Violinist James Cuddeford was also a scholarship student at the Yehudi Menuhin School, and at 15 he became the first person to reach the British national finals of both the BBC Young Musician of the Year and BBC Young Composer of the Year. His compositions have been played and broadcast by many ensembles and he has performed regularly throughout Europe and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician," Mr Holton continued.
"Playing viola in the quartet is Jeremy Williams, who studied both violin and viola at Wells Cathedral School in England. Upon graduating with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama he was accepted by the London Symphony Orchestra as a member of the first violin section and has been dedicated to chamber music ever since. From 1998-2002 he was Principal Viola of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, but was delighted to return to chamber music with an invitation to join ASQ in 2002," Mr Holton said.
"Niall Brown started playing the cello at age six and again attended the Yehudi Menuhin School. He completed his studies with Radu Aldulescu in Switzerland and Holland, and went on to be a prize-winner in cello and chamber music competitions in Great Britain and Holland. Niall has performed as a soloist with many ensembles and has partnered artists such as Yehudi Menuhin, Gary Karr, Alberto Lysy and Janos Starker. He joined the Australian String Quartet in 1997," Mr Holton added.
Mr Holton said that the Australian String Quartet was proud of its commitment to taking music to all Australians, from the cities’ concert halls to outback communities, and the regional centres in between.
"Regional touring in the past four years has taken the quartet all over Australia from Bendigo to Toowoomba and many places in between. The Australian String Quartet is the country’s only professional full-time string quartet, presenting a national subscription season in each state capital, as well its rigorous regional touring schedule," Mr Holton explained.
The ASQ has the support of the Commonwealth Government, through the national performing arts program, Playing Australia, which gives Australians across the country the opportunity to see some of the best performing arts.
Bookings can be made through Select Music Systems in Franklin St, Traralgon by telephoning 5174 2849.
