Bush Lovers Major Day OutThroughout the month of September, people of all ages will be uniting across Australia in the name of Landcare to wage war on one of the greatest threats to Australia’s unique biodiversity – weeds. By Latrobe City - 16th September 2013 - Back to News Bushcare’s Major Day Out is the brain child of a long time bushcarer Don Wilson, who said he was inspired by the fantastic impact the grass roots program Clean up Australia has made to the environment.
"Most people underestimate the impact weeds have on the environment but they now account for about 15 percent of the total flora across Australia – and this means our native species are being increasingly displaced," Mr Wilson said.
"The flow on effects of this has major implications for not only plant species but for our native birds and animals, which are losing their food sources and habitat."
"This day will be a great chance for people to take action and also enjoy a really fun and interesting day out for young and old."
"Just because our local reserves are protected from development doesn’t mean they are healthy," Don explained.
"When working amongst bushcarers you also feel the strong community spirit and you can’t but have a smile on your face after your morning’s effort."
Latrobe City Council’s acting mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that in the Latrobe region there are two Bushcare Major Day Out events being held on Sunday 22 September.
"The first is at Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve in Moe and those interested can meet at the ‘A Frame’ car park off Coalville Road at 9 am. Morning tea will be provided by the Committee of Management and activities including manual removal of woody weeds and planting of native shrubs should be completed by noon.
"The other event at Crinigan Bushland Reserve in Morwell will start at noon with a guided tour by representatives of the Latrobe Valley Field Naturalists group. Following that there will be planting of indigenous flora species undertaken along with painting of nesting boxes. Volunteers can meet at the main car park off Fairway Drive near the entrance to the Morwell Golf Club. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the afternoon. Activities will conclude at 4 pm.
"These events are a great way for new volunteers to pitch in and help out at the reserves whilst meeting like-minded people – come along and enjoy the day, if you really want you can do both events," Cr Gibson concluded.
Just as Clean Up Australia Day has made us a litter conscious nation, Bushcare’s Major Day Out aims to celebrate our concern and love for the bush whilst learning about the role we can all play in its continued care.
