Labor Forgets Gippsland Seniors In Transport Plan

Senior Gippslanders have been shamelessly betrayed in the State Government’s $10 billion transport pipe-dream, Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said today.

By Phillip Davis - 22nd May 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said the city-centric Bracks Labor Government ignored the needs of senior country Victorians when offering free Sunday public transport.

"The Labor Government pretends it governs for all Victorians, but has blatantly discriminated against older country Victorians," Mr Davis said.

"Failure to provide the same free Sunday travel to country Victorian seniors is an absolute insult to these older people who have spent their entire lives working and contributing toward making Victoria such a great state."

Under the section Travel savings for seniors, Labor’s plan reads:

"…free travel will be provided to Victorian seniors on Sundays within metropolitan Melbourne and within major regional centres such as Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo."

"What about senior country Victorians who live outside Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo?" Mr Davis said.

"Even those senior citizens in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo will only be eligible for free transport on the limited local bus services.

"Surely the Bracks Labor Government should extend this free Sunday transport offer to senior citizens in Gippsland and include V/Line services, which is the most important public transport service in country Victoria.

"It is outrageous that this free travel is not extended to senior citizens in country Victoria.

"This is yet another example a city-centric Labor Government who does not care about country Victoria.

"It is time the Bracks Labor Government stopped treating Gippslanders and other country Victorians like second-class citizens."
