Innovation Groups for future industry growth in Gippsland

An update on news, events, activities and opportunities across the Food & Fibre sector in Gippsland.

Want to join our innovation groups?

Food & Fibre Gippsland continues to explore and work in ways that are more connected and collaborative to facilitate innovation, and position Gippsland strongly within local and global food and fibre value chains. We're calling for expressions of interest to join our Innovation Groups. There'll be a group for each of the three priority areas; Craft Malting, Online Platform Development, and the High-Tech Processing Hub to create value-add opportunities for regional produce. Welcome to the latest addition to our team - Bonnie Dawson!

Bonnie joins VegNET Industry Development Officer, Shayne Hyman as an Extension Support Officer, and together they'll continue capacity building work for the region's vegetable industry. Bonnie is a current postgraduate student of Agricultural Science and a graduate with Bachelors of Health Sciences and International Development. With significant experience in stakeholder engagement and project management, Bonnie has an interest in and a developing knowledge of the agricultural sector. She enjoys engaging with producers and being able to support their vital and dynamic contributions to our local community and economy. Welcome Bonnie - we're delighted you've joined the Food & Fibre Gippsland team!

Free professional development for teachers in Gippsland!

We won't be making teachers juggle apples at our free professional development days in term 4, but our GIPPYAg Project Leader Dr Amy Cosby will be sharing lots of resources with easy and achievable lesson plans ready to implement across multiple subjects, including science, biology, chemistry, agriculture, design, food technology, and digital tech.

There'll be interactive, hands-on knowledge shared for activities like non-invasive fruit testing, digital farm mapping, and satellite imagery. Participation is free, but registrations are essential!

Update your industry knowledge with Abares!

With a conference program specifically tailored to the Gippsland region, the ABARES Regional Outlook Conference in Warragul on Wednesday 30 October is the essential information, commodity forecasting and networking event for those working in primary industries in Victoria. ABARES is the research arm of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture and provides professionally independent research, analysis and advice for government and private sector decision-makers on significant issues affecting Australia’s agriculture. The conference is free to attend but pre-event registration is essential.

Agriculture Victoria is holding hands-on workshops for producers using the National Livestock Identification System database. Participants will learn how to update their Property Identification Code details, complete a Property to Property transfer and use the database feature. The workshops are free so secure your spot today!

Gippsland's profile as a foodie destination continues to grow as talented chefs do creatively delicious things with quality local produce. Two of the region's chefs came home from the 2020 Good Food Guide Awards in Brisbane this week with some extra baggage in the shape of a One Hat Award. And there was another Gippsland chef who was just one point away from One Hat.........

Welcome to another new member - Flavorite!

Inaugural winners of our Gippsland Agribusiness of the Year Award, Flavorite is now also part of the ever-expanding Food & Fibre Gippsland member tribe. They are Australia’s premier grower and marketer of flavoursome vine-ripened produce with a range that includes tomatoes and cherry tomatoes on the vine, capsicums, Lebanese cucumbers and eggplant. Regenerative grazing advice and ideas for smaller properties

East Gippsland Regional Landcare (with the EGCMA) has been running information days for small property owners.

The next one is on Sunday 20th Oct at the Swan Reach Hotel from 10 am to 2.30 pm. Graeme Hand will be speaking about grazing management and how you can apply regenerative grazing principles to smaller properties. It's a great opportunity to meet fellow small property owners and get advice from experts in the field. Participation is free, and lunch is included.
