Northe Welcomes Funding For The Tour Of Gippsland

$27,500 has been allocated by the Coalition Government through Tourism Victoria's Events Program to assist with marketing cycling tours occurring in the Gippsland region.

By Russell Northe - 15th July 2011 - Back to News

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the Scody Cup event had become one of Australia's most fiercely competitive and spectacular bike races, with the „first leg‟ of the Series being the Tour of Gippsland from 27 to 31 July.

"The event will showcase all the spectacular scenery, colourful fishing and boating villages, lakes and rivers of the Gippsland region," Mr Northe said.

"The event will also provide tourism benefits for the region and protect local jobs."

The Coalition Government is committed to supporting the regional Victorian tourism industry and strengthening our reputation as national leaders.

Tourism is a significant economic driver for Victoria, contributing $15.8 billion to the Victorian economy and employing 185,000 people across the state.

The Coalition Government's funding will be used to help with marketing the event through promotion through the cycling industry as well mainstream television and print advertising, including a documentary series on SBS.

"Last year the tour took in towns such as Wonthaggi, Morwell, Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. This year will consist of an 85 km road race from Morwell to Maffra via towns such as Tyers, Glengarry, Toongabbie and Cowwarr," Mr Northe said.

"Victoria offers tourists an array of cycling experiences including mountain biking, tracks and trails, road cycling and events, which enhance the State‟s position as a premium cycle tourism destination.

"I encourage community members to come along to either of these stages and witness one of the most exciting racing events to come through our region."

Stage 5 of the eight-stage competition starts on Friday 29 July from 2:00 till 4:00pm at the Bunnings car park at Mid Valley shopping centre and will consist of a 85 km road race from Morwell to Maffra via Maryvale, Tyers, Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Heyfield and Tinamba.
