Planning For Gippsland’S Future Waste Management Needs

The collection and disposal of household waste, green waste and recyclables are being reviewed as part of the development of a new waste management plan for the Gippsland Region.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 2nd February 2007 - Back to News

The Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group (GRWMG) has commissioned Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Pty Ltd to assist in the GRWM Plan. The plan will consider the resource recovery and disposal of waste generated in the community for the next 10 years. The Gippsland Region includes the member Councils of Bass Coast, Baw Baw, East Gippsland, Latrobe City, South Gippsland and Wellington.

The plan is being developed in line with changes to current waste management practices required due to statutory policies, occupational health and safety requirements, best practice, environmental management guidelines and technology improvements. As an example, you might be interested to know that the future of hard waste collections is uncertain due to occupational health and safety reasons. The plan will reflect Victorian waste management objectives and targets, and provide a framework for waste management in each member Council.

As a region, Gippsland is facing a number of challenges with regards to waste management. Littering and illegal dumping is a problem in many areas and the cost of clean-up usually falls on Local Governments (and ultimately ratepayers). Resource recovery and disposal from rural properties for material such as chemicals, chemical drums and silage wrap is another issue. In general the community has been very supportive of initiatives to collect these materials. Other areas being examined for the Regional Plan include population growth (including tourist population) and the pressure this can put on existing infrastructure, the need for a regional sorting facility for recyclables, and the life expectancy of landfills in the region and planning beyond this life.

Despite the increase in recycling over the last 10 years, we are still sending significant amounts of waste to landfill. To really make a difference, we need to create less waste in the first place, and learn to use materials more efficiently. The key to being Waste Wise is to reduce waste and reuse items, as well as recycle and purchase recycled goods.

The GRWMG has pioneered many successful programs in the Gippsland Region, and aims to continue this practice to actively reduce waste and care for the environment. Some of the projects include promotion of Waste Wise programs in the community, litter reduction research and the provision of suitable infrastructure and supporting the silage wrap and the drumMuster collection program.

Ultimately, it is the local community who will determine whether waste reduction initiatives are successful. The GRWMG is keen for community input at all stages in the development of the Regional Plan.
