New Children’S Centre For Wonthaggi

Bass Coast Shire Council, Wonthaggi Primary School and Wonthaggi Kindergartens Inc. have combined forces to construct a Children’s Centre in Wonthaggi.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 20th December 2006 - Back to News

Approval for the project has just been received from the Department of Education.

Stage 1 will be to build a new kindergarten at the rear of the Wonthaggi Primary School site.

Stage 2 will eventually also include a room for out of school hours care, vacation care and a consulting room for early childhood specialists.

The Centre will be constructed on an unused parcel of Wonthaggi Primary School land, on the corner of King and Drysdale Streets.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, said that Council, the Primary School and Kindergarten committed the funds for Stage 1, after funding submissions made to the State Government were unsuccessful.

"Council has committed $558,000 over two financial years towards the construction of Stage 1 of the Children’s Centre," said Cr Goodwin.

"The Primary School and Kindergarten have each committed $10,000.

"The effort put into this project by the community has been unwavering and it has been such a positive collaboration between everyone involved," continued Cr Goodwin.

Sandra Taranto of the Wonthaggi Kindergarten committee said the committee, teachers and parents are excited by the prospect of a new facility.

"This is fantastic news, after over five years of lobbying by the community to get this project off the ground," said Ms Taranto.

"It shows how important persistence is in making things happen."

Approval from the Department of Education means detail designs can now be prepared for the project.

Ms Taranto said the aim was to have Stage 1 completed and ready for the kinder to operate from term 4 in 2007.

"The current space leased by the kindergarten is really not adequate for its current needs," said Ms Taranto.

Wonthaggi Primary School Principal, Wes Holloway said the new location would benefit parents and the children.

"Having the kinder located next to the school will be a great convenience for families with children attending both facilities," said Mr Holloway.

"It will also help ease the transition of children moving from kinder to school."

Council, the Primary School and Kindergarten are currently in discussions with the Department of Education over an agreement for management of the facility. They will also be seeking government funding to cover Stage 2 of the project.

"Once both stages of the project are finished, Wonthaggi will have a centrally located, convenient children’s facility," said Mr Holloway.

"And this will be a great thing for local families."
