Mayor Outlines Transition Activities With Shadow MinisterAn invitation to meet with Greg Hunt, Shadow Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Heritage presented Latrobe City Council with an opportunity to discuss transition and engagement activities at a By Latrobe City - 6th August 2013 - Back to News federal level.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that Council first met with Mr Hunt during 2012 and provided him with information about a number of key projects.
"During the meeting we discussed a range of topics including the Opposition’s proposed Direct Action Plan and a number of the projects outlined in Council’s Securing Our Future 2013 document.
"Mr Hunt commended us for leading the Latrobe Valley’s transition and encouraged this proactive approach. With Council’s Low Carbon Transition policy due to be reviewed in coming months it will be pertinent to reflect on the progress we have made in recent years to transition our community.
"Council has long been committed to working with the government of the day to ensure a positive future for our community and we will continue to do this. However, we also welcome the opportunity to talk to the shadow minister about the transition work that we are leading in Latrobe City. We encourage the opposition to maintain an open channel of communication with us in the future, regardless of any election outcome.
"I invited Mr Hunt to visit Latrobe City to meet with our Council and community and to continue engaging with us. This invitation is also open to the Opposition Leader, Mr Abbott, and any other shadow ministers who are interested in supporting our community, and of course remains open to members of the current Australian government," Cr Kam said.
"I stressed to Mr Hunt that ongoing changes to macro-economic policies relating to carbon emissions continue to create uncertainty in our community already affected by Australian Government policies relating to a price on carbon. What we would like to see is some genuine engagement with our community, including the provision of up-to-date and clear information about what the new policies mean for us, and what the government of the day will do to help us transition and transform in coming years.
"We asked Mr Hunt for a commitment to engage with Latrobe City Council and with our community in the future, a commitment to maintain open channels of communication and to work with Latrobe City Council in order to rebuild community and investment confidence after several years of government policy uncertainty," Cr Kam concluded.
