Representing Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue, Member for Eastern Victoria Danny O’Brien said the project was one of 166 community safety initiatives receiving $1 million in funding as part of the latest round of Community Safety Fund grants.

"I’m pleased to announce a $10,000 Community Safety Fund grant to replace the existing fence, which is more than 50 years old," Mr O’Brien said.

"Trespassers have taken advantage of the situation and gained access to the club, leaving behind broken bottles and causing graffiti and vandalism damage.

"The new fence will not only help to prevent vandalism and theft, but it will ensure members and the broader community can continue to enjoy the club’s great facilities."

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the Victorian Coalition Government was supporting communities to fund local crime prevention initiatives that will deliver safer, more connected communities.

"Effective crime prevention requires residents, communities, businesses and all levels of government to work together," he said.

"Everyone needs to play their part, and we can all take some simple steps to secure our own property and get involved in local community action to help drive down crime."

The Community Safety Fund provides grants of up to $10,000 for community groups and councils to implement locally based crime prevention projects including:

· installation of security equipment such as locks, vandal proof security lighting, alarms, security screens, fencing and secure storage;

· design initiatives such as improving lighting to encourage community use of public spaces;

· crime prevention awareness and education activities;

· activities supporting communities to work together to identify crime prevention priorities and solutions; and

· initiatives for people at risk of offending.

Crime Prevention Minister Edward O’Donohue said the Community Safety Fund supports local communities to implement practical projects to deter crime and promote safety.

"Community safety projects come in many different forms, from installing improved security features to undertaking community awareness activities," Mr O’Donohue said.

"Over the past three years, the Coalition has provided more than $3.8 million to fund 588 projects across the state through the Community Safety Fund."

The grants are part of the Victorian Government’s $35 million Community Crime Prevention Program, which helps promote community safety and prevent crime in communities across Victoria.
