Latrobe Valley's new 100MW big battery boosts energy reliability, cuts power bills, and supports Victoria's renewable transition

A 100MW Latrobe Valley big battery has officially opened, boosting energy reliability, cutting power bills, and supporting Victoria's renewable transition, helping achieve government storage targets while delivering affordable electricity.

A new big battery has joined Victoria's growing network of energy storage systems in the Latrobe Valley - delivering affordable electricity to homes and businesses and supporting the state's shift to renewable energy. Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio today officially opened the 100 Megawatt Latrobe Valley Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), located beside the existing Morwell terminal station.

Latrobe battery boost

The battery was developed and operated by Tilt Renewables - a leading renewable energy business and the largest owner of wind and solar generation in Australia, adding another project that will pump cheap electricity into local homes and businesses across the Latrobe Valley.

The battery will boost the reliability of the electricity network by storing power for use during peak periods. By storing energy, the project will also help cut energy bills and keep the grid running smoothly, ensuring safe and reliable electricity for homes and businesses.

Energy storage is central to Victoria's transition to renewable electricity generation, and this project will play a crucial role in achieving the government's legislated energy storage targets of at least 2.6 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030 and at least 6.3 GW by 2035.

Big battery state

Victoria is the home of big batteries with 12 large scale energy storage systems with a total output capacity of 1028 MW in operation - that's more than any other state. The Latrobe Valley BESS joins an impressive line-up of batteries operating or in development around the state, including the 300 MW Victorian Big Battery and 600 MW Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub.

The government strongly supports investment in battery and energy storage projects, ensuring that industry can continue to find our state rich with opportunities for collaboration in this sector.

Renewable energy win

Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio said, "This is another renewable energy win for the Latrobe Valley, helping more homes and businesses benefit from this project, including lower bills and having a more secured power supply. Energy storage is critical to the transition - and we're making great progress towards our first renewable energy storage target of at least 2.6 GW by 2030."

Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh said, "This battery will increase electricity supply in peak demand periods and lower power prices for everyone."
