Bass Coast Shire Council and the CFA will join forces during September and run free Home Fire Safety Workshops for older residents, thanks to a Community Safety Week grant from the Department of Human Services.

Older members of the community are invited to attend the workshops, which will be held in Cowes and San Remo.

"Statistics show that elderly people make up a large proportion of the casualties that are a result of fire," said Jeanette Draper, Aged and Disability Manager with Bass Coast Shire Council. "This is a major concern to Council and the CFA, and is why we have initiated these sessions.

Andrew Smith from the CFA said that he hoped people who attended the sessions would learn valuable safety tips.

"We will be showing people what to do to prevent and deal with fires in their home," said Mr. Smith.

The first Home Fire Safety Workshop will be held in Cowes at the Senior Citizens Centre, Lions Court at 10.30am on Thursday 6 September. The second workshop will be held San Remo Community Health Centre on Monday 17 of September at 10.45am.

For more information about the workshops, contact Andrew Smith from the CFA on 5952 3913 or Sue Milner, Occupational Health & Safety Officer, Aged & Disability Services at the Bass Coast Shire Council on 5671 2425 or 5951 3311.
