Baw Baw Shire Council is reviewing its Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) and we want to hear from you! Whether you're a pet owner, an animal lover, or just passionate about your community, this is your chance to have a say in shaping the future of domestic animal management for our Shire.

Your feedback will help shape a relevant Domestic Animal Management Plan. Complete the survey or submit your input by 11 April 2025

Domestic animal plan

Every four years, as required by State legislation, Council must prepare a new Domestic Animal Management Plan, due for submission by the end of the year, and this review will guide the development of the 2026-2029 plan. The DAMP is all about creating a safe, responsible, and pet-friendly community. It focuses on:

• Promoting responsible pet ownership
• Ensuring the welfare of dogs and cats
• Protecting residents, public spaces, and the environment from nuisance pets

Key topics under review include:

• Compliance with relevant legislation
• Access to leash-free areas
• Reducing the risk of dog attacks
• Tackling pet overpopulation, euthanasia rates, and rehoming efforts
• Minimising nuisance issues related to dogs and cats
• Boosting pet registration and identification
• Training for Authorised Officers and improving Council processes

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Councillor Danny Goss emphasised the importance of community input in shaping the new plan. "Our residents play a crucial role in ensuring that Baw Baw Shire remains a responsible and pet-friendly community."

Pet ownership review

Cr Goss said, "This review gives us the opportunity to listen to the community and make improvements that benefit both pet owners and non-pet owners alike, so we encourage everyone to get involved and share their thoughts."

West Ward Councillor Jess Hamilton feels the new plan will help put community feedback into action. "Pets are an important part of many households, and this plan will help us ensure that Council is supporting responsible pet ownership while addressing any challenges, and your feedback is essential in creating a well-balanced and effective plan for the years ahead."
