Concept Plans For New Franklin Street Bridge On Show

Concept plans for a replacement bridge over the Traralgon Creek in Franklin Street, Traralgon, are now available for viewing at council service centres and on the Latrobe City website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.

By Latrobe City Council - 17th August 2007 - Back to News

Latrobe City is planning to replace the existing low level bridge in Franklin Street, Traralgon with a new higher level reinforced concrete bridge, and is currently providing the community with an opportunity to peruse concept plans.

Latrobe City’s general manager City Marketing and Development, Peter Quigley, said the proposed new structure took into account the increased traffic being experienced following residential development east of Traralgon Creek.

"The detailed design for the bridge and corresponding road works including arrangements for relocation of services will be completed this financial year. Council will then be asked to consider funding the project in the 2008-09 capital works budget," Mr Quigley said.

"A detailed hydraulic study of creek flows in the vicinity of the proposed new structure has already been completed to ensure there are no adverse impacts on flood levels in the immediate area."

Mr Quigley said that recent heavy rain and subsequent floodwaters was a reminder that the existing structure is subject to inundation. "For many newer residents in Franklin Park, the bridge closure during the recent flooding was a novel experience. However, in wet years it can be a fairly common occurrence. It is expected that the new bridge will not be closed due to flooding as frequently as present, due to the higher design levels and improved waterway area under the bridge," Mr Quigley explained.

"The new bridge will be designed to carry heavier traffic that will enable the existing load limit to be removed. The width of the bridge will provide for two traffic lanes 4m wide and a shared path 2.5m wide, as well as a 1.5m wide footpath. The new structure will also provide an opportunity for a shared bicycle path to be continued underneath the bridge, to avoid cyclists and pedestrians having to cross busy Franklin Street, as is currently the case," Mr Quigley added.

The design of civil works and the coordination of the structural design is being managed by the City’s infrastructure and development design team.
