Local photographic club exhibits at Latrobe Regional Gallery

Commencing on Saturday 13 August in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery, at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell, is ‘Expeditions through the lens’ an exhibition of works from the Coal Creek Camera Club.

Gallery Director Louise Tegart, said that over the years the Club has had many successes including wins in the Victorian Amateur Photographic Society (VAPS) competition against 49 other Victorian clubs.

"Several members have also been successful on the National Exhibition Circuit, with other members moving on to professional careers in photography," Ms Tegart said.

"This exhibition demonstrates a wide range of subject matter. There are the traditional landscapes and portraits, but there are also other works that display the camera’s versatility in producing creative work. These images will challenge people to consider what they can do with their cameras, as well as make them rethink what photography is all about," Ms Tegart explained.

"The exhibition is, as a whole, of a very high standard. It is not hard to see why in 2003 the club beat many larger clubs from the metro area and throughout Victoria to finish equal first with Geelong for the VAPS 2003 competition," Ms Tegart said.

Emerging from the collective interests of a local four-wheel-drive group, the Coal Country Camera Club was established in 1982. In 2005 the Club continues to offer new and experienced photographers the chance to learn and build their skills within a supportive environment.

Coal Country Camera Club conducts regular workshops, field trips, bi-monthly competitions, practical nights and has guest speakers from Melbourne and the local area.

An auction will be held during the official opening of the exhibition on Friday 19 August at 5.30pm. RSVP to the Latrobe Regional Gallery by Tuesday 16 August on 5128 5700. The works to be presented for auction will be available for pre-auction viewing and bids at Morwell Art and Framing, Chickerell Street Morwell from Wednesday 10 August to Thursday 18 August.

All proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre as a part of the Clubs ongoing support to this vital community based initiative.

Coal Country Camera Club would like to thank the local community for their support through sponsorship and donations including, Webster’s Butchery Yinnar, Morwell Art and Framing, Parkinson Wholesalers, Elgas, Monacellars, Zanella Estate Wineries, Cowwarr/Toongabbie Lions Club and Latrobe City Council.

Expeditions through the lens continues until Sunday 28 August 2005.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, and on weekends 11am to 4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
