Transport study will identify Gippsland’s transport funding needs

Gippsland’s transport needs will be put under the spotlight by the Gippsland Local Government Network.

By Wellington Shire Council - 27th September 2004 - Back to News

The Gippsland Special Needs Transport Study has been initiated by the East Gippsland, South Gippsland, Baw Baw, Latrobe City, Wellington and Bass Coast Shires with the aim of boosting Gippsland’s opportunities to access funding under the Federal Government’s Transport Policy - AusLink. The study will cover all aspects of the transport network including road, rail, ports and aerodromes.

Chair of the Gippsland Local Government Network, Cr John Hulley, said that Gippsland, a region of great national significance, currently risks ‘falling between the cracks’ of AusLink unless it develops strong cases for funding. The Gippsland Special Needs Transport Study will identify the needs of integrated transport within Gippsland in accordance with the principles and objectives of AusLink.

He added that Gippsland is an area with particular transport requirements, being one of the nation’s principal energy producing areas, a major tourism destination and one of the most productive agricultural areas.

He said that Gippsland warrants special treatment and this study will provide real backbone for our case for Auslink funding.

Funding for the study was provided by the GLGN Councils and the Federal Department of Transport and Regional Services under the auspices of the Sustainable Regions Program.

Transport and logistics firm Meyrick and Associates has been engaged to complete the study and are interested in hearing from all stakeholders who may have an interest in the Gippsland Transport Network in order to ascertain current and future demands.

Regular updates on the progress of this study will be provided through the GLGN network. Anyone interested in participating in this is welcome to contact Anya Richards of Meyrick and Associates (ph. 8643 4100, email melbourne@meyrick.com.au).
