Season’s Greetings from the AGI Board

Gippsland Regional Assembly Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development Jaala Pulford observed "food and fibre is the hidden secret of Gippsland".

At the recent Gippsland Regional Assembly Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development Jaala Pulford observed "food and fibre is the hidden secret of Gippsland," acknowledging the food and fibre sector contributes $7bn of the $15.3bn gross regional production. Our story is often lost because we break up the value chain into "farming" and "food processing," and take for granted a sector that is all around us but quietly "getting on with the job".

Over the past 12 months the Agribusiness Gippsland team has worked hard to showcase the fact that food and fibre underpins the prosperity and vitality of the region. In 2016 we have had record attendances at events we hosted, including our Annual Conference; the Agribusiness Insights Forum with partner KPMG; the Agribusiness Leaders Luncheon with partner the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.

Together with Regional Development Victoria we released a Food and Fibre Prospectus that includes six case studies showcasing the best of the regions' products. For over 18 months we have worked with the Department of Education to shape the new Latrobe Technical School which will open in 2018. Agribusiness Gippsland is the first industry partner to support this initiative.

Throughout 2016 Agribusiness Gippsland has worked to ensure food and fibre is an integral part of the Victorian Government’s new Regional Partnerships Program. This program engages with regional communities to ensure they shape key Government initiatives. Our Chair Paul Ford is Deputy Chair of the Gippsland Regional Partnership facilitation group.

In 2017, we are committed to deliver key events and projects that make food and fibre connected, respected and valued as a key sector in Gippsland's economy.
