Mr Owen said that the Dairy Action Plan ( Stage 2 ) will be the blueprint for the development of the dairy industry through:

  • Promotion of Gippsland’s rich resources
  • Highlighting investment opportunities.
  • Building stronger agribusiness.

"Gippsland is now the jewel region in Victoria for dairying," Mr Owen said.

"A Plan for the future will make that jewel shine for a viable, strong and sustainable dairy industry for Gippsland."

Victoria is Australia’s top food exporter, peaking at $ 6.7 billion in 2001 and $6.2 billion in 2002, or 26 per cent of all national exports. Dairying produces half that total at $ 3 billion .

A strong Plan should ensure that the current growth trend of the Australian dairy industry over the last two decades will continue in Gippsland and a doubling of milk production from 2 – 4 billion litres can be achievable by the 2020.

"On today's prices that will be an extra $ 600 million per annum at the farm gate. This is big dollars for Gippsland and the flow-on effect of that in agribusiness and to the community is exciting for Gippsland," Mr Owen said.

The concept of a plan has been ruminating in offices of Gippsland’s local government development units, in other development organisations, in farmer groups -GippsDairy, UDV and in minds of Gippsland’s movers and leaders over many years and it is a great achievement that the first stage of the plan has been launched.
