Mr Joseph Cullen, Chief Executive of South Gippsland Shire Council said:

‘We are delighted to be participating again after the success of our Grassroots Tour of innovative sustainable businesses last year. The Gippsland Innovation Festival is the largest regional innovation festival in Australia and will gain national and local media exposure for participants. It is a great opportunity to showcase innovation in South Gippsland as part of a national event.’

The objective of the Gippsland Innovation Festival is to demonstrate the value of research, development and partnerships which benefit the region. The program will include events, lectures, information sessions and exhibitions that relate to innovation in our area.

Mr Cullen continued: ‘Innovation occurs throughout Gippsland. Local Government has a key role in recognising, leading and stimulating innovation across all sectors. We are encouraging local business and community groups to participate and take advantage of the opportunity to put their achievements on stage.’

Mr Paul Buckley, Chief Executive Officer of Latrobe City and Chairperson of the Gippsland Innovation Festival responded: ‘It is great to have the support of all six municipalities for the festival. We know that South Gippsland has the capacity to really add strength to the program. This is a real opportunity for the whole of Gippsland to work together.’

Some of the desired outcomes from the Gippsland Innovation Festival include:

  • Increased investment and employment opportunities across Gippsland
  • Stronger understanding of innovation within the community and how it impacts on our lives
  • Greater collaboration across the Gippsland region
  • Effective marketing and promotion of the region to a national audience

Mr Cullen concluded: ‘We want to ensure that our municipality is well represented within the national program as part of the Gippsland Innovation Festival. A number of these may be events that are already planned for May 2005, and would benefit from linking with the program. We would welcome expressions of interest from across the Municipality’
