Community Support Shown For Traralgon Creek Project

The Traralgon Creek Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP) has received a strong endorsement from the local community with the establishment of a steering committee to develop a detailed plan for the project.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th June 2005 - Back to News

More than thirty representatives of government agencies, landowners, local industry and the community, met last month to hear details of the proposal and to look at ways of progressing the overall improvement of the Traralgon Creek waterway and catchment. As a result of that meeting a steering committee was formed and met for the first time last Wednesday night.

Commenting after the meeting, NEIP Project Officer, Mike Answerth, said that the Traralgon Creek project was something in which all sectors of the community could participate.

"We already have a strong commitment from the power and forest industries, environment groups and the statutory authorities, and we have held initial discussions with retail businesses, schools and landowners abutting the creek. All parties have expressed an interest in working towards achieving a clean and attractive waterway along the full length of the Traralgon Creek," Mr Answerth said.

The Traralgon Creek Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan is a proposal submitted to the Environment Protection Authority last year following extensive work by Latrobe Environment Reference Group.

The EPA approved the proposal and in March this year, Latrobe City appointed a NEIP Officer to coordinate the project and facilitate the development of a final action plan for implementation.

The NEIP is a relatively new concept of community–driven environmental action which has been conducted in less than six communities throughout Victoria. The Traralgon Creek NEIP is the first such project endorsed for Gippsland. The final plan is expected to be available early in 2006.
