Election proves support for Bastion Point boat ramp: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has described his election result in Mallacoota as a vote to construct the Bastion Point boat ramp.

By Craig Ingram - 6th December 2006 - Back to News

"The Save Bastion Point ramp opponents attempted to use the election as a plebiscite to show the community’s opposition to the proposed ramp," Mr Ingram said.

"They must now acknowledge that the result shows that the majority of the Mallacoota community supports the proposal.

"For decades, Mallacoota has been held to ransom by a vocal minority, which is impacting on sensible and sustainable development."

Mr Ingram said Mallacoota needs to protect and enhance tourism industry jobs, as well as lifestyle opportunities.

"Access to quality and safe off-shore boating is an essential part of that future," he said.

"The development of high quality tourism infrastructure and experiences in the far east is one of the few tangible opportunities that communities, like Mallacoota, have to attract and keep working aged and young people in the area.

"It is now time for the opponents of this important regional project to start working for the best interests and the future of Mallacoota and abandon their negative, inaccurate scare mongering.

The election outcome at Mallacoota delivers the mandate to build the boat ramp and backs up the previous plebiscite, which clearly showed that over two thirds of the local population supports the proposed ramp.

I will be strongly advocating on behalf of my constituents that the Bastion Point ramp must go ahead in this term, Mr Ingram concluded.
