Melina Bath and the San Remo Community Association seeks control of foreshore to improve maintenance and accountability

San Remo Community Association wants control of the foreshore to address neglect, improve maintenance, and deliver better local outcomes. Locals and Council back community-led management for lasting improvements.

San Remo Community Association is seeking to take responsibility for the San Remo foreshore from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA). Locals are concerned with the reserve's deterioration - DEECA assumed control on behalf of the state government in 2019, shifting the maintenance away from a Committee of Management.

Restore local control

Raising the issue on behalf of locals in parliament, The Nationals' Melina Bath called for the San Remo Community Association to be put in charge. "The amenity of the 27 hectare foreshore reserve has been declining with locals citing sporadic maintenance and stalling of important works - they are disappointed that this once well-kept area is looking neglected."

Ms Bath said the San Remo Community Association has good governance and is brimming with talented and motivated volunteers. "Bass Coast Shire Council has recently adopted a proactive San Remo Structure Plan and is supportive of the reconvened community group."

"The Association has a strong vision and plan to improve accessibility, infrastructure, signage, and safety using revenue allocated through the foreshore's caravan park. Locals unanimously support foreshore management returning to the community with clear lines of accountability and action," she said.

Locals leading change

Ms Bath continued, "The Association members have a real vision to enhance the area for locals and the many thousands of tourists that flock to the region each year - projects include walking tracks, recreational facilities, erosion control, and parking upgrades."

"Handing over ownership and empowering locals is a sensible decision that would deliver improved social, environmental and economic benefits, leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes. This change would be a positive win for both the government and the community," said Ms Bath. The Minister's response is due 19 July 2025.
