World Class Art Career Began In The Valley

Nationally and internationally renowned studio glass artist Nick Mount was first introduced to working with glass in the Latrobe Valley and the Latrobe Regional Gallery is delighted to be hosting his exhibition

Nick Mount: the fabric of work from 3 August – 29 September.

Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that it was appropriate that this exhibition was on show at the Gallery, in the region where Nick’s career began.

"He was honoured in 2012 by Object: Australian Centre for Design as the subject of a Living Treasure: Masters of Australian Craft survey exhibition. Nick was one of the first students to attend the Gippsland School of Art, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (currently Monash University) and fortunately for all of us, met a visiting glass artist from USA, Richard Marquis. The result is an outstanding career which has produced exquisite glass works as well as teaching and mentoring generations of other craftspeople in Australia and overseas.

"The beauty of the artworks and craftsmanship in this exhibition is breathtaking. This exhibition experience is for everyone, whether you have a specific interest in art or not – it is impossible not to be overwhelmed by the attention and care placed on how these objects are made. There is also something very satisfying that these beautiful objects reference tools such as plumb bobs and spirit levels and apples and pears, bounty from an ordinary garden, Ms Adams said.

"Mr Mount has said that he identifies as a maker and believes ‘work’ is fundamental in the development of identity. This principal extends well beyond those that call themselves ‘craftspeople’ and, he believes that the fabric of our community is, to a large extent, determined by the work we do with our hands. His new work is based on these ideas and very clearly demonstrates the input and influence of the community of the Glass Studio at JamFactory. The pieces presented in this exhibition describe the dominant themes and aesthetic of my work over the last few years, said artist Nick Mount.

"Nick Mount will discuss his work with his friend, fellow artist, art historian and mentor Nigel Lendon at the Latrobe Regional Gallery at 1pm Saturday 3 August. This event and entry to the exhibition and gallery is free and open to all members of the public," Ms Adams concluded.

The exhibition will be formally opened on Friday 2 August at 6pm.
