The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed a report commissioned by Gippsland Ports for managing the Lakes Entrance bar.

"The entrance is an extremely important economic asset for the region and providing a safer more reliable entrance would add millions to the local economy," Mr Ingram said.

"The detailed study has made a number of significant recommendations including the extension of the sand transfer systems to provide a sand bypass on the ocean groynes.

"The study has found that current dredging practices have not been successful, in fact it has caused the bar to grow and more sand to accumulate.

"The report has recommended an alterative to the current dredging regime and ultimately the replacement of the April Hamer and the Sandpiper with a more efficient sand management system.

"I look forward to working with Gippsland Ports and passing on the importance of providing a safe and efficient solution to the State Government," Mr Ingram concluded.
