Come On The Scene Exhibition

A new exhibition on show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery Come on the Scene, a Next Wave and NETS Victoria touring exhibition

By Latrobe City Council - 3rd August 2009 - Back to News

Presents the work of five young regionally-based contemporary artists who transform the communities around them through their creative practices.

Based in diverse locations across regional Australia, each artist’s work fuses innovative contemporary art methods and processes with a grass-roots connection to the people and communities, which characterise their town or regional centre. The resulting works provide a fresh perspective on regional Australia and the role of art in fostering a new sense of community and connectedness.

In a departure from fixed metropolitan – or institution-led models of community development – these artists have taken a leading role in defining their own sense of people and place, with their skilful, intricate, and often witty approaches to art making coming to the forefront.

This exhibition of young contemporary artists from Next Wave’s Regional Kickstart program features new media, sculpture, painting, printmaking and installations.

Come on the Scene demonstrates the power of young contemporary artists to create new connections and communities across generations and geographical distance.

Come on the Scene artist and rock star pretender, Trevor Flinn will be conducting a workshop designed for young adults ‘No talent necessary’ on 22 August. Workshop participants will create their own band (imaginary or real) merchandise: including band T-shirt, cover album art and a great sounding band name.

Come on the Scene opens on 1 August and continues until 11 October.
