Local Champions Off To State Finals

Local students Jade Dowsett and Ele Mason-Sakkas have won the Gippsland round of Australia’s largest creative writing competition for students "NESTLÉ Write Around Australia".

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th September 2003 - Back to News

Jade, a year five student at Longford Primary School and Ele, a year six student at Mallacoota P12 College, were presented with their certificates and prizes at a special presentation on Saturday 13 September at Stratford Library, Tyers Street, Stratford.

Cr Peter Gault presented Jade and Ele with certificates, a collection of Australian children’s books (valued at $500) for their school library and a backpack bursting with Nestlé goodies.

The two zone winners wrote a 500 word story which was judged by a panel of local teachers, librarians and authors. They joined 18 other Gippsland finalists at a creative writing workshop with Australian author Krista Bell, where they had the opportunity to rework their stories using the new skills they had learnt.

The "NESTLÉ Write Around Australia" competition attracted 783 entries in this zone, and 11,738 entries from around the state.

Council’s Library Services Manager Stephen Dempsey said he was hoping Jade or Ele could go on to become State or even National winners.

Jade and Ele will attend the State presentation in Melbourne, where they will each receive their own collection of books by Australian children’s authors worth $500. If they are selected to be a State winner, they will receive a personally engraved pen and their story will be published in an official story collection. Their stories, along with those of the other finalists, will be archived for posterity in the State Library of New South Wales.

Mr Dempsey said, "NESTLÉ Write Around Australia is a community program developed to encourage children to take part in creative writing and to utilise the resources of public libraries."

The program is coordinated by the State Library of New South Wales and supported by public libraries around Australia, including Wellington Shire libraries.
