A joint marketing initiative of three Gippsland Shires has been nominated for the prestigious Melbourne Airport 2003 Victorian Tourism Awards.

"Experience Gippsland" is a joint marketing initiative of Wellington Shire, Latrobe City and Baw Baw Shire Councils and has been commended by Minister for Tourism, John Pandazopoulos for a state tourism award.

Mr Pandazopoulos praised Experience Gippsland for investing time and energy into striving to be among Victoria’s best.

"Experience Gippsland" is the marketing banner used by the three Shires for joint promotions at events including Liesurefest; Caravan and Camping Shows in Melbourne and Sydney; the 4WD Shows and Melbourne Flower and Garden Show.

The three Shires pool resources and finances to improve their promotion capabilities.

The nomination for the Victorian Tourism Awards follows a Certificate of Recognition from Country Victoria Tourism Council at the Regional Tourism Awards presented to Experience Gippsland in July.

Wellington Shire Council Tourism Development Officer Frank Norden said the Certificate of Recognition had provided encouragement to the three Shires to pursue the "Experience Gippsland" campaign and look toward future developments.

"Attending the Victorian Tourism Awards in November will be a great experience for us and we hope that the promotional work we have undertaken both regionally and interstate, will pay off," he said.

Mr Pandazopolous said by entering such awards, Councils and businesses were displaying pride and confidence in their achievements.

He was particularly impressed with the number of entries given the tourism crisis of the past twelve months.

"In a time of unprecedented challenges for the industry, the participation of so many tourism operators in this year’s Awards shows great commitment and resilience," Mr Pandazopoulos said.

The Victorian Tourism Awards gave the industry an essential boost, reinforcing the enormous value of tourism to the community, and recognising the hard work of tourism operators. It also showcased some of the great tourism opportunities available across Victoria.

Tourism is one of the State’s most important industries, responsible for 150,000 Victorian jobs and $8.5 billion in economic activity.

The Melbourne Airport 2003 Victorian Tourism Awards will be presented at a gala ceremony at Crown Casino on Monday 10 November.

All winners represent Victoria at the Australian Tourism Awards in Perth next February.
