Active Club Grants announcedMember for Morwell Russell Northe said the Grants of up to $10,000 each will make a significant difference to the local clubs in the community. By news@gippsland - 6th June 2016 - Back to News Sporting and recreation clubs across the Morwell electorate have received a share in almost $1 million in the latest round of VicHealth’s Active Club Grants, to help get Victorians more physically active.
Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the grants, of up to $10,000 each, will make a significant difference to the local clubs in our community.
"These clubs are often reliant on the hard work and dedication of volunteers and its therefore pleasing to see the diversity of successful applicants under this round of funding," Mr Northe said.
"Successful applicants can now put this money towards essential equipment and safety gear in a bid to encourage participation in physical activity.
"Sports and active recreation clubs are a great way to find like-minded people in your local community and get the recommended two-and-a-half hours per week of moderate exercise for adults" Mr Northe said.
"Regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses, it also makes us mentally healthy, alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life."
The following 11 clubs will share in almost $1 million worth of VicHealth Active Club Grants:
- 1st Churchill Scout Group $1,500 - Tents and men’s uniforms
- Morwell Junior Football Club Inc $2,625 - Football competition jerseys
- Tyers Soccer Club Inc $3,000 - Playing strips, junior and senior
- Churchill United Soccer Club $2,393 – Team playing shirts
- Traralgon and District Pony Club Inc $3,000 – Show jump wings
- Yallourn Golf Club Inc $2,968 – Beginners golf clubs
- Pax Hill Tennis Club $2,767 Tennis nets, balls and shirts
- 1st Newborough Scout Group $2,453 – Hiking tents and handheld GPS
- Churchill Tennis Club $1,989 – Tennis uniforms, balls, nets and racquets
- Latrobe Valley Yacht Club $1,344 – Level 50 PFD and inflatable PFD
- Gippsland Athletics Incorporated $870 – High jump uprights, measuring sticks and crossbars
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said it was important to support local sporting organisations.
"Less than half of adult Australians are currently getting enough physical activity to benefit their health. Our goal at VicHealth is to get 300,000 more Victorians taking part in physical activity by 2023," Ms Rechter said.
"In the last 10 years alone, VicHealth has provided more than $14 million to thousands of Victorian organisations through our Active Club Grants, providing more than one million club members with access safer and better-equipped clubs," she said.
"Sports and recreation clubs in the Morwell electorate are a great way for people to get more physically active, as well as make new friends. We know from previous rounds these grants encourage community members to try a new activity, support them to join their local club or continue playing their favourite sport."
