Churchill Youth Action Centre signed up for fun-packed activitiesThe Churchill Youth Action Centre has finally been put on the map with the new Youth Action Centre sign being displayed on the building for all to see. By Latrobe City Council - 20th June 2003 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Youth Action Centre Worker, Kerryn Super said that the young people at the centre were very excited to see the new sign.
"They feel a real sense of belonging coming here and the sign represents that community spirit to the outside world," Ms Super said.
Ms Super said that the Youth Action Centre has a long list of up and coming events for the young people of the district to take part in.
"We have just finished the bike repair program, whereby a local community volunteer advised the young people how to maintain and repair their bikes, that are essentially the only means of transport available to this age group," Ms Super said.
"Our next project is the Gorgeous Girls program, aided by Council’s Youth Services team. This will enhance self-esteem and make the young people aware of the world around them. It’s a fun program to take part in," Ms Super explained.
"Following that, the Get Wise, Not Wasted program will run from 25 June to 2 July. The message is basic – we educate young people about the uses and misuses of alcohol and drugs, but in a fun, down to earth manner, designed to get through to young people at their own level," Ms Super continued.
"Next month, we will be running Kyokushin Karate, which is a traditional Japanese Martial Art. This style of Karate promotes the spirit of perseverance, and is a great activity for mind and body," Ms Super said.
Ms Super explained that the programs offered at the centre are supported by partnerships with other agencies such as Latrobe Community Health and Youth Substance Abuse Service.
"We try to enhance young people’s knowledge of the services available in their area. It is also ideal for workers to be able to interact with young people and get an idea of what is happening in their communities," Ms Super explained.
The Churchill Youth Action Centre is located at Gaskin Park, Manning Drive. It is open between 4pm to 7pm. The centre is for young people aged between 12 to 18 years old. For more information please call Kerryn on 5132 2800 or free call 1800 196 884.
