Community safety concerns in Latrobe

Many Victorians are alarmed with the increasing youth crime rate in Latrobe. Read the reaction of the Member for Morwell Russell Northe about this issue.

Rising crime and in particular youth crime has many Victorians concerned for their welfare and safety.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said unfortunately in Latrobe we have seen an 8.4% increase in crime according to the latest Crime Statistics Agency data.

"In the 2015/2016 financial year, more than 13,500 offences were committed across Latrobe City, 1,000 more than the preceding 12 months," Mr Northe said.

"The Melbourne Labor Government has failed Victorians on law and order by not keeping pace with the recruitment of front line police given the increase in population and rising crime across our communities.

"Indeed when the previous Labor Government left office in 2010, it left a legacy of Victoria having the least amount of police per capita of any Australian State or Territory," he said.

"The Coalition when in Government committed to and delivered significant additional police numbers to Latrobe Valley police stations, but unfortunately the current State Labor government hasn’t kept up with the growing demand."

Mr Northe said he recognised the Government had announced Police Custody Officers (PCOs) for the Latrobe Valley but the reality was that more uniform police are needed.

"Our communities are concerned about their safety and we need more frontline police on the beat to tackle crime," Mr Northe said.

"Our local police do a wonderful job serving and protecting our community but they need greater support and investment from the Andrews Labor Government."
