Work On New Traralgon Creek Footbridge To Start Soon

Work will soon commence on a new replacement shared path bridge across Traralgon Creek following the awarding of a tender for construction work at Monday night’s council meeting.

By Latrobe City Council - 22nd September 2009 - Back to News

The replacement bridge, to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, will once again link Agnes Brereton and Harold Preston Reserves by what many will consider a more convenient crossing point, and replaces a suspension bridge located at the site for a number of years and dismantled last year.

Latrobe City’s deputy mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said the bridge is an aesthetically pleasing raised steel-arch design which will enhance the Traralgon Creek environment.

"With a prefabricated concrete decking, the replacement bridge will no doubt be especially welcomed by those with mobility scooters as the old suspension bridge was unsuitable for their use. The old bridge was not Disability Act compliant.

"For many, the need to detour via other paths while the new bridge was being planned, will have been an inconvenience. I thank all those affected, for their patience," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Cr O’Callaghan said planning for the new bridge involved considerable community consultation with council inviting the community to comment on five potential bridge designs.

"I’d like to thank all those who provided input into the consultation process with suggestions or comment. The result of public consultation has been the delivery of an attractive and practical solution for replacement of its predecessor," Cr O’Callaghan said.

The pedestrian suspension bridge over the Traralgon Creek at Agnes Brereton and Harold Preston Reserves was dismantled and removed from the site last year following the bridge’s closure for safety reasons.

Construction of the new bridge is being funded from the Australian Government’s Community Infrastructure Program.

Council awarded the tender for construction of the bridge to HCM Constructions Vic Pty Ltd, who will commence work on the project shortly. The completed structure is likely to be operational by the Christmas school holidays 2009.
