A New Restaurant On The Menu In Glengarry

The Latrobe region as a wine and food destination is set to be enhanced by further development at Narkoojee Winery in Glengarry.

By Russell Northe - 16th July 2013 - Back to News

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said "The Victorian Government will contribute funding to help extend the existing winery building and establish an adjoining casual dining venue.

"Delicious food and great wine go hand in hand at Narkoojee Winery, as anyone who has attended its annual Long Lunch in the Vines will attest," Mr Northe said.

"Visitors have long called for a permanent restaurant on site, so owners Val and Harry Friend are going to create a dining experience that showcases top local produce and award-winning wines in beautiful surrounds.

"The extension will increase the winery’s capacity to host a range of functions, from weddings to business events, as well as cater for families and large tourist groups."

Mr Northe said the $398,000 project would create local jobs and attract tourists to the region by taking advantage of its location on the coastal route between Melbourne and Sydney.

"Employment will be generated during the construction phase, with a further 10 jobs, including six full-time positions, to be created once the restaurant opens," he said.

"The Latrobe Valley has great potential as a tourist destination and the outstanding hospitality on offer plays a central role in enticing visitors to come and stay, or perhaps even relocate permanently.

Mr Northe said "Narkoojee Winery has been a great ambassador for Gippsland since 2004, representing the region at events in Melbourne and exporting internationally, and its success contributes to a stronger local economy."

"The Victorian Government would provide a $50,000 grant towards the project through the Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund.

"The Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund is a component of the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund and has been set up to help Gippsland companies create and retain jobs," he said.

"By stimulating regional economies we can help sustain long-term growth and create a prosperous future for all Victorians."

Narkoojee owner, Val Friend said "We are delighted to accept the grant of $50,000 from the State Government. These additional funds will enable us to complete some additional infrastructure and environmental projects to enhance the physical environment and social experiences of those who visit."
