Book Box Program Needs Volunteers And Donations

Latrobe City Council is working in partnership with Berry Street on the Early Learning is Fun (ELF) program with the aim of placing book boxes in prominent spots across the municipality.

By Latrobe City - 29th July 2011 - Back to News

In order to successfully launch this creative venture, Latrobe City is looking for organisations, community groups or individuals who are able to either build a box, provide a child-friendly venue for a box or donate good quality second-hand books.

Latrobe City’s Early Literacy Project Officer, Sara McAlister, said that the book boxes would provide free and easy access to a wide range of books to children in the places that they visit.

"We have all the materials for the boxes, but we need help in constructing them and placing them in appropriate locations. Initially, we are looking to have five boxes built for Morwell and so we need five places where we can locate them. If your business or community group can help, we would love to hear from you.

"We are also looking for donations of good quality books, appropriate for children aged from birth to five years.

"The idea is that the boxes are hosted by local businesses, shops and in community spaces so that children and their parents can take a book home to enjoy together; exchange a book from home with one from the book box; or enjoy a story together at the host venue," Ms McAlister said.

"We know that children need to feel safe, secure and loved in order to learn and we know that when we read, talk, sing and play with our children every day we create a nurturing relationship.

"Getting the support of the wider community in constructing or hosting a box, or even donating books for the program, would make this great program even more inclusive. It is our aim to encourage the children and families of Latrobe City to share this special time together through books and to affirm the link between everyday activities that build relationships and learning," Ms McAlister concluded.

For those who are interested in building a box, providing a venue for the book boxes, or donating books, please contact Sara McAlister or Robert Richardson at Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700. A diagram of the design of the book boxes is available.
