Community engagement workshops for Longwarry and Noojee

The communities of Longwarry and Noojee in collaboration with Baw Baw Shire Council are taking part in community planning workshops to set priorities for the next five years.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 10th July 2006 - Back to News

The council workshops will assist the Longwarry Progress Association and the Noojee Development League to involve community members in planning long-term community projects, according to council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson.

"The workshops give the communities ownership over what takes place in their local environment" Mr Patterson.

"When it comes to making decisions about what’s important for a community, it must come from the community. The workshops help give structure to these ideas."

Longwarry held its community planning workshop on Wednesday 5th of July, with very constructive results.

"It was great to see such enthusiasm and working together we achieved a lot on the night," said Longwarry Progress Association President Shirley Higman.

"It is important to identify and prioritise the needs of the community and we went a long way to putting action plans in place"

Participants deliberated over which projects from those identified would benefit their communities most.

Through a voting process a number of key priorities were identified including town beautification, developing business growth and adult education.

The workshops will help produce a more comprehensive and accurate community plan.

As part of the process a community profile is also developed that provides an overview of the facilities, events and community groups in each of the towns.

Participants also identify ways townspeople could work together to improve their communities for the future.

Noojee will be holding its community planning workshop on Saturday 15th July.

Noojee Development League President Wendy Edgar is encouraging the community of Noojee to attend the workshop, "This is giving everyone a chance to have their say on the future of Noojee".
